DATA

Nº of hectares under vine: 95 - Nº of vine growers: 43 - Nº of wineries: 7 - Harvest 21: Excellent - Production 21: 315.000 liters - Marketing: 62% National - 38% International.

SITUATION

It includes the region of Aiara (Ayala), located in the north-western area of the province of Alava and corresponding to the basin of the Nervión river. Specifically, it covers the municipalities of Amurrio, Artziniega, Aiara (Ayala), Laudio (Llodio) and Okondo.

CLIMATE

Similar to that of the Bizkaiko Txakolina denomination of origin, determined by the maritime influence of the Cantabrian Sea, although somewhat less humid and drier and cooler than the latter. In fact, the main risk in the area lies in spring frosts. However, it should not be forgotten that part of the vineyard borders the most inland plantations of the Bizkaiko Txakolina DO.

SOILS

There is a great diversity of formations, from clayey to gravelly, precisely those that to date are giving the best results and where quite stable ripening is achieved.

VARIETIES

Main varieties: hondarrabi zuri (80%)
Authorized: petit manseng, petit courbu and gross manseng.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES

WHITES
Made mainly with the autochthonous variety hondarrabi zuri, the txakoli from Alava has great similarities with those of the other two Basque provinces, especially with that of Bizkaia. Pale steely or greenish in color, it offers notes of fresh herbs and a slightly riper fruity character than its neighbors. It is somewhat rounder and tastier on the mouth, thanks to slightly higher alcohol content and, although fresh, it has less acidity.
