Albillo mayor

Synonyms: turruntés, albilla, pardina.

Variety linked to regions of Ribera del Duero and Cigales in Spain. It is a grape that has sometimes been confused with the Albillo Real from Madrid, though its characteristics are significantly different. Its early budding and ripening make it very sensitive to the spring frosts of the Ribera. It has a higher acidity than albillo or albillo real, which has encouraged some producers to subject it to long ageing with good results. The best example of this varietal and its ageing capacity can be found in a white wine from Ribera del Duero, Arzuaga Albillo 2008 (bodega Arzuaga Navarro).

In terms of style it can produce structured, aromatic and sapid wines, although some producers are simply looking for the expression of a fresh, young and easy-drinking wine. Its recent approval as an authorised variety for the production of white wines under the Ribera del Duero appellation - previously white wines could not be produced in Ribera del Duero - will enable us to see an ever-increasing development of the types of wines that this variety can offer.
