SITUATION
The wines of Almansa are produced in the extreme southeast of the province of Albacete. The vineyards extend through the municipalities of Almansa, Alpera, Bonete, Corral-Rubio, Higueruela, Hoya-Gonzalo, Pétrola and El Villar de Chinchilla. It is the easternmost area of La Mancha, in transition to Levante, bordering with Yecla and Alicante.
CLIMATE
Continental type, somewhat less extreme than the one in La Mancha, but with very hot summers, reaching 40°C. Rainfall, on the other hand, is scarce and averages around 350 mm per year. Most of the vineyards are cultivated on the flat land, although there are some vineyards in hillside areas.
SOILS
Of limestone type, poor in organic matter and with some clayey areas. The vineyard sits at an altitude of about 700 meters.
VARIETIES
White: chardonnay, verdejo, sauvignon blanc and muscatel of small grain.
Reds: garnacha tintorera (majority), cencibel (tempranillo), monastrell (second in extension), syrah, merlot, garnacha, cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot and pinot noir.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES
WHITES
Increasingly less present in the region, they are made with verdejo and sauvignon blanc, while a few years ago those of airén prevailed. They are straw yellow in color, light, fruity, tasty and easy to drink.
ROSÉS
They have a pinkish or salmon-pink color; frank on the nose, fresh and fruity, in the mouth they are usually tasty and easy to drink.
RED WINE
The Garnacha Tintorera has all the prominence of the region, giving powerful, very fruity, fresh and fleshy wines, either alone or accompanied by Monastrell.
