SITUATION

There are 16 municipalities that make up the Campo de Borja Denomination of Origin, located in the northwest of the province of Zaragoza, 60 kilometers from the capital, in a transition zone between the mountains of the Iberian System (in the foothills of the Moncayo) and the Ebro Valley: Agón, Ainzón, Alberite, Albeta, Ambel, Bisimbre, Borja, Bulbuente, Burueta, El Buste, Fuendejalón, Magallón, Malejan, Pozuelo de Aragón, Tabuenca and Vera del Moncayo.

CLIMATE

Continental type, quite extreme, with cold winters and dry and warm summers. One of its main characteristics is the influence of the cierzo, a cold and dry wind from the northwest. Rainfall is quite scarce and is between 350 and 450 mm. per year.

SOILS

The most abundant soils are of the brown limestone type, terrace soils and clay-ferrous soils. The vineyard is located between 350 and 700 meters above sea level on small, gently undulating slopes, on the terraces of the Huecha river and the Llanos de Plasencia, in the Moncayo somontano.

VARIETIES

Whites: macabeo, garnacha blanca, moscatel, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, viognier and verdejo.
Reds: Grenache (majority with 75%), Tempranillo, Mazuela, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Caladoc and Marselan.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES

WHITES
Made mainly from macabeo and muscatel, they are light, fresh and pleasant. There are also experiences of barrel fermented whites.

ROSÉS
With a quite remarkable level of quality, they are made mainly from Grenache; they are somewhat fresher than those from Cariñena and stand out for the flavorful character in the mouth provided by the variety.

RED WINE
Also based on Grenache, this is the most important type of wine in the area. Dark cherry-colored in their youth, they have good aromatic intensity and offer notes of ripe black fruits; on the mouth they are tasty, fruity and fleshy. The crianza wines are somewhat smoother and rounder; however, the traditionally made reservas and gran reservas may have animal aromas and early reduction aromas due to the oxidative character of the garnacha.
