SITUATION

In the southwestern area of the province of Pontevedra, it includes five different sub-zones: Val do Salnés, O Rosal, Condado de Tea, Soutomaior and Ribeira do Ulla.

SUB-ZONES

Val do Salnés. This is the historical subzone of Albariño (in fact, here almost all the whites are made as single-varietal wines from this grape) and its center is the town of Cambados. It has the flattest orography of the five.
Condado do Tea. The most inland, located in the southern part of the province and north of the Miño pass. It is characterized by its more mountainous character. The wines must have a minimum of 70% Albariño and Treixadura. 
O Rosal. In the extreme southwest of the province, at the mouth of the Miño on its right bank. Warmer sub-zone where river terraces abound. The wines must have a minimum of 70% albariño and loureira.
Soutomaior. Located next to the Verdugo river, about 10 km. from Pontevedra, it includes only the municipality of Soutomaior. It produces only single varietal albariño.
Ribeira do Ulla. New subzone around the Ulla river basin, which determines a landscape of high valleys as one moves inland. It covers the district of Vedra and part of those of Padrón, Deo, Boquixon, Touro, Estrada, Silleda and Vila de Cruce. Red wines predominate.

CLIMATE

Atlantic type, with mild temperatures moderated by the influence of the sea, high relative humidity and abundant rainfall (the average is around 1,600 mm). Following the riverbed of the Miño (Condado de Tea), rainfall decreases and consequently, the grapes ripen earlier.

SOILS

Sandy, shallow and slightly acidic soils that make up soils suitable for quality wines. The predominant type of rock is granite and only in the municipalities of Sanxenxo, Rosal and Tomillo is it possible to find a narrow band of metamorphic rocks. Quaternary deposits are frequent in all the subzones.

VARIETIES

White: albariño (majority), loureira blanca or marqués, treixadura and caíño blanco; torrontés and godello.
Reds: caíño tinto, castañal, espadeiro, loureira tinta, sousón, mencía, loureira tinta and brancellao.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES

WHITES 
Marked by the personality of the Albariño grape. They have a color ranging from pale yellow to greenish yellow. In the nose they develop herbaceous and floral aromas of excellent intensity that can remind us of ripe apple, apricot, fennel or mint. The mouth is distinguished by its oily and glyceric feel, its fruity character and persistence (in the best examples with good doses of complexity and elegance). In the whites worked with their own lees, a greater depth in the mouth is appreciated. Bright yellow and even golden colors show less freshness and a greater complexity of nuances. These wines have the capacity to improve with some time in bottle.
 
RED WINE 
Very minority to date. The first examples reveal a markedly Atlantic character; they are very luminous cherry-violet wines; they are distinguished by their notes of red fruits and herbs that can remind us of eucalyptus and, in the mouth, a high acidity is appreciated.
