SITUATION
In the northeast of the province of Murcia, within the region of the Altiplano, and integrated by a single municipality, that of Yecla.
SUBZONES
A distinction is made between Yecla Campo Arriba, with a majority presence of Monastrell grapes and alcoholic content of up to 14 degrees; and Yecla Campo Abajo, which produces lower alcoholic content grapes (around 12 degrees for reds and 11.5 degrees for whites).
CLIMATE
Continental type with some Mediterranean influence, with warm summers and cold winters, and low rainfall of around 300 mm. per year.
SOILS
The soils are mainly limestone, deep and with good permeability. The vineyard sits on undulating terrain at an altitude of between 400 and 800 meters above sea level.
VARIETIES
White: merseguera, airén, macabeo, malvasía, chardonnay.
Reds: monastrell (majority, 85% of the total), red garnacha, cabernet sauvignon, cencibel (tempranillo), merlot, tintorera and syrah.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES
WHITES
They usually have a straw yellow color; they are fruity and have a fairly good aromatic intensity, although in the mouth they can be somewhat short of acidity.
ROSÉS
They are not the most representative of the area, but the best ones follow the modern elaborations for this type of wines and are, therefore, quite fruity, fresh and pleasant.
RED WINE
They are the most characteristic product of the region and also the most abundant. Made basically from Monastrell, they have a purplish cherry or garnet cherry color. Aromatically, they offer notes of ripe fruit and, sometimes, raisin-like features may appear due to the strong sunshine in the area. In the mouth, they are fleshy, warm and smooth.
