SITUATION
In the northeastern corner of Catalonia, in the province of Girona. The production area includes 55 municipalities and occupies the slopes of the Rodes and Alberes mountain ranges describing an arc, which goes from Cape Creus to the so-called Garrotxa d'Empordà, in the case of the Alt Empordà, and with the Gabarres Massif and the Montgrí Massif in the case of the Baix Empordà.
CLIMATE
The climate is conditioned by the tramontana, a strong north wind that affects the crops. Otherwise, winters are mild, with little frost, and summers are hot but moderated by the action of the sea breeze. Rainfall is around 600 mm. per year.
SOILS
In general, the soils are poor, granitic in the mountainous areas, alluvial in the plains and slate in the coastal strip.
VARIETIES
White: Recommended: white Grenache, Macabeo (Viura), white Carignan and Muscat of Alexandria. Authorized: xarel.lo, chardonnay, gewürztraminer, malvasía, moscatel de gra petit, picapoll blanc and sauvignon blanc.
Reds: Recommended: carignan, red grenache (lladoner roig) and red grenache. Authorized: cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, monastrell, tempranillo, syrah and garnacha peluda.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES
WHITES
More and more wineries are turning to the production of these wines. Local and foreign varieties coexist. They are fresh, easy to drink and tasty. They have a purely Mediterranean character.
ROSÉS
Of a pinkish-raspberry color, they are fruity and relatively intense, fresh and light. They have a wide chromatic and stylistic range, from pale pink to intense raspberry. They are fresh, fruity and have good acidity.
RED WINE
They have gone from producing new red wines (immediately marketed after the harvest and to be consumed within the year) of garnet cherry color, light, easy and pleasant to drink, with good acidity and red fruit aromas, to focus on the creation of aged wines, with a good balance between fruit and oak and rich balsamic nuances.
LIQUEURS
Traditional wines of the region made from Grenache. Reddish amber in color, they develop notes of mistela and rancio on the nose; in the mouth they stand out for their sweetness and pastiness.
